Losing My Perspicacity July 26, 2024
Canadian soccer drama reaches new heights. Could the US lose the 2028 and 2034 Olympics? Food in the Olympic Village is not so great. We have a great new place to read about women’s sports. The US Women look like a million bucks in 3-0 win over Zambia. Fiji makes the Olympic Village beautiful.

Before I started writing tonight, I participated in a Zoom call for white women who are fired up to campaign for and donate to Presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The call organizers included feminist luminaries like Glennon Doyle, Connie Britton, Pink, Carol Leifer, Shannon Watts, and Andrea Gibson. When I jumped on, there were about 50,000 women in the Zoom. Within minutes, it jumped up to 136,000 women and crashed shortly after that. It turned out this was the biggest Zoom call in history, crashed the platform (I got kicked out three times), and raised $1.2 million for Kamala Harris’ campaign fund. There also were rumors of many women being unable to get into the call at all.
On Thursdays, we organize 💪🗳️💙
Thanks @shannonrwatts for convening 100K of us to raise $1.2 million to elect the brilliant @KamalaHarris! And 🙏 to @Pink@conniebritton@GlennonDoyle@MalloryMcMorrow etc for the inspiring words. Let’s f*ing go. #Kamala2024#womenforharris

It was a great moment and a great night, and it feels like women, and especially white women, are united around a candidate this time around in a way they weren’t for Hillary in 2016. Is it too early to be optimistic? Probably. There is still so much work to do. But it does feel like there’s been a sea change, with far more white women having done some self-examination and reflection on how our voting choices affect other marginalized groups. If only we had started this back in 2016, we might not have had to endure four years of Donald Trump and his attempt at a second go-round. Hats off to Shannon Watts, who founded Moms Demand Action, who organized the call.
.@shannonrwatts is challenging white women to show up for Harris—I’m so in.
Here’s Shannon’s list of things you can do:
Phone bank
Knock on doors
Combat misinformation
Talk to your friends & combat their fears— Maria Shriver (@mariashriver)
