Losing My Perspicacity February 10, 2025

JD Vance lies to America; Sen Bill Hagerty lies to Face the Nation; We could really use the CDC right about now; ABC is still platforming dum dums; and The High Note.

Good morning and Happy Monday. I’ve long believed America should have the day after the Super Bowl off, and I stand by that belief. No one is going to be in any shape to work today.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, I was happy with the outcome, heartily disappointed by the commercials, and elated that the MAGA crowd had to watch a steady stream of “DEI” content, along with a halftime show that featured Samuel L. Jackson dressed as Uncle Sam and an American flag made up entirely of Black men. Honestly, I was waiting for Sam to take a shot at Trump. Alas.

Of course, the FOX broadcast did their best to normalize fascism, shouting out both Donald Trump and Rupert Murdoch during the game. My favorite moment came when the camera panned to Trump during the national anthem (while Jon Batiste sang, no less) and saw him saluting the flag like the draft-dodging performative dipshit he is. Of course, the crowd cheered wildly because no one is paying attention to anything. Of course, Trump picked the Chiefs to win because he knows almost nothing about football.

My favorite meme from the 2020 election is still relevant:

Yeah, it was just a football game, but one team was decidedly more MAGA than the other, and it felt like we pushed back a little bit of the darkness, even if just for four quarters. (Apologies to my dear friends Mark, Sarah, and Bob in KC — still love you all.)

The oft-rumored “five ads” supposedly bought by Elon Musk never materialized — unless they were so innocuous I didn’t notice them. There was one T-Mobile commercial touting a partnership with Starlink, which is enough to ensure I never give T-Mobile my business, ever.

The only ad that stood up to classic Super Bowl ads like “Terry Tate: Office Linebacker” and the infamous Budweiser “Whassup” ads was the Totino’s ad featuring I Think You Should Leave’s Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson (otherwise known as Richard Splett and Edwin Afuko, and the person Jason Sudeikis named Sam Obisanya after):

I’d also like to make it clear to any celebrities out there that just because someone offers you a Super Bowl ad doesn’t mean you have to say yes. Looking at you, Seal.

Uh…yikes.

There was also a bizarre Tubi ad where a guy had a cowboy head. Like, a cowboy hat, but made from flesh and seared onto his head. Apparently, he was born that way, which is upsetting to think about as a woman. I refuse to embed or link to it because I never want to see it again. It was deeply unsettling.

Today: JD Vance lies to America; Sen Bill Hagerty lies to Face the Nation; We could really use the CDC right about now; ABC is still platforming dum dums; and The High Note.

Here we go.

JD Vance should have his law degree revoked

To. be honest, I keep forgetting that JD Vance exists, and when I am reminded, I am immediately filled with the white-hot fury of a thousand suns. Vance has seemingly had enough of being completely ignored by Trump and his BFF, Elon Musk, because he took to Twitter over the weekend to prove his willingness to cosplay a total moron to win Trump’s love.

Vance, of course, is flat-out lying. Any third-grader in America can explain how the checks and balances system of the US Government works, and every law student takes Constitutional Law in the first semester of their first year. It’s not up for debate that the judiciary acts as a check on the executive and legislative branches, determining when the other two branches violate the Constitution. For JD to pretend that is not the case is not only deeply immoral, it’s un-American.

Vance, as he loves to remind us, got his law degree at Yale, and I’d imagine they are heartily embarrassed today (or at least, I’d like to think they are). I reached out to Yale’s law school and asked them for comment, but they hadn’t replied at the time of publication. This should be grounds for having your law license revoked.

Of course, Vance’s tweet was shared by Elon Musk himself, who hasn’t a clue what’s in the US Constitution and is the best example of the Dunning-Kruger effect I’ve ever seen. Okay, maybe it’s a tie between Musk and Aaron Rodgers talking about epidemiology.

For GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney, is also a lawyer, and she beat Vance’s ass on this one:

JD Vance - If you believe any of the multiple federal courts that have ruled against you so far are exceeding their statutory or Constitutional authority, your recourse is to appeal. You don’t get to rage-quit the Republic just because you are losing. That’s tyranny.

Liz Cheney (@lizcheney.bsky.social)2025-02-09T19:34:03.502Z

Liz Cheney is not someone I’m aligned with politically, but I do respect her undying devotion to trolling these assholes into oblivion, if not her politics or her father.

Get ready to hear a lot more of this “the judicial branch has no right to weigh in on Trump’s actions!” garbage. I sense that they had Vance float it out there to see how it played, and, as one would expect, a lot of Twitter ate it right up. Look at this dumbass:

I have a couple of Schoolhouse Rock videos both ShariRae and Vance can watch together to clear up any confusion.

I’ll let my governor, JB Pritzker, have the last word.

Liberals, assemble the Attorney General. We’re going to need them.

Speaking of liars….

This is still going on. Today it’s sex-change operations for Hamas.

HAGERTY: Think about it -- sex change operations in Guatemala? BRENNAN: The govt does not fund sex change operations or Hamas. You know that though. Do you have any evidence that the govt is funding a terrorist group? H: Certainly. The funds that went to UNRWA B: UNRWA is not a terrorist group

Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com)2025-02-09T16:08:24.408Z

That’s Tennesee Senator Bill Hagerty lying his ass off on Face the Nation.

UNWRA, for those that don’t know, is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees. It took all of 15 seconds for me to debunk this myth online, and it sucks that anchors are never able to do this in real-time, even with a producer in their ear. The point here isn’t that UNWRA isn’t a terrorist organization, which it’s not, but that Hagerty is absolutely making things up and sharing them with the American people as if they were factual. That’s what Brennan should have been hammering him on. But she let him off the hook.

UNWRA does not perform sex-change operations, though they do promote gender equity as part of their mission.

Bill Hagerty is a liar and should be treated as such by the media.

This would be a great time for the CDC to be online

It seems that the “temporary pause” on communications between America’s health organizations and the American people is still on — nothing has been updated on the site since January 10. Sadly, the bird flu will not take time out to wait for America to get its ish together.

Here’s what happened over the weekend:

The newer variant of avian influenza that recently infected dairy cattle in Nevada has a genetic change that’s thought to help the virus copy itself in mammals — including humans — more easily, according to a new technical brief from the US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

***

The USDA report comes as a dairy farm worker in Nevada has screened positive for H5N1, the first human infection identified in the state. The worker’s symptoms include red, inflamed eyes, or conjunctivitis, according to a source familiar with the details who was not authorized to speak to the media. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working to confirm the initial positive test.

Meanwhile, in New York:

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered a temporary closure of live-poultry markets after bird flu was detected in the outer boroughs of New York City.

The order, signed by Hochul on Friday, requires the markets to close down between Feb. 7 and Feb. 14 as facilities undergo a complete disinfection process.

ADVERTISING

It calls for markets that have not tested positive for bird flu to sell down all inventory and shut down for five days after the cleaning process in New York City, plus Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau counties.

Sellers that do have indications of bird flu among their flock must contact the state’s Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Said immunologist and former federal health official Rick Bright, “We’ve never been closer to a pandemic from this virus, and we still are not doing everything possible to prevent it or reduce the impact if it hits.”

Uh… is it time to take down my bird feeders? Someone? Anyone?

Bueller?

Your daily inspiration to get loud

Early in the weekend, I saw a poll that said majority of Americans polled agree with what Trump/Musk is doing to federal agencies. I’ll be honest, I was gobsmacked. How can anyone approve of what’s happening, much less a majority of those polled?

Then I saw this clip making the rounds yesterday.

ABC is platforming total ignoramus Trump supporters who can't even justify their own voting decisions

Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com)2025-02-09T17:08:27.787Z

If that chick’s answers don’t fire you up for the fight this week, nothing will. Absolute morons in this country.

And I get it! Politics is exhausting. Who wants to sit around writing their hands over the state of the Republic all the time? I’d much rather hang out with my friends, watch sports on TV, and read mystery novels.

But as I saw someone say on Instagram, while we all wanted to be the Frodo who gets to live in The Shire and have second breakfast, we unfortunately are the Frodo that has to deal with Sauron. So deal with him we will.

The High Note

Each day, I do my best to leave you with a smile on your face and a song in your heart, despite the state of the world.

Here is today’s offering:

Survive and advance today, kids. Don’t let the bastards get you down.
